An ultrasound scan of the abdomen is often requested by a doctor where abdominal pain is experienced and the cause is not clear. It gives a structural view of many abdominal organs, including the liver, gall bladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, prostate gland, uterus and ovaries.
Abdominal scans / ultrasounds can be used to diagnose the following symptoms or conditions:
- Abdominal pain
- Liver damage
- Inflamed pancreas
- Kidney dysfunction
- Aortic aneurysm
- Enlarged spleen
- Prostate problems
The patient is asked to fast for four hours before the abdominal scan -an ultrasound of the upper abdomen i.e. liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys.
The examination will be carried out by a qualified Sonographer. The procedure is non-invasive and painless. The Sonographer will move a transducer lubricated with gel over the area to be examined. You are welcome to ask questions during your examination.
a) Negative Scan
In general, a negative scan is good news which means that the scan is normal.
b) Positive Scan
A scan may be positive for a specific condition, for example, gallstones, which means that an abnormality or disease has been identified.
The report and conclusion usually focus on this abnormality. The results are immediate and a written report will be given to you.
